I don’t know if you have had of it; Toyota is planning to unveil an electric car that will change everything as this electric vehicle comes with a solid-state lithium-ion battery. I can cover a range of up to 300 miles and can easily be fully charged within ten minutes. Isn’t the Awesome?

Well, solid-state batteries are highly sought after and are perceived as the holy grail of battery electric car technology. Toyota’s entry in the solid-state battery race could be a game changer for electric cars.

It could be a huge step forward for electric cars if Toyota is able to mass-produce solid-state batteries that live up to their expected hyped life. What is the working principle of solid-state batteries? Solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte to replace the liquid electrolyte used in a traditional lithium-ion battery. They are more stable and less likely to overheat or catch on fire. Solid-state batteries also last longer than their lithium-ion counterparts and are lighter. 

When will this revolutionary Toyota solid-state battery for electric cars be available to the public? Well, according to Nikkei, Toyota will unveil a prototype vehicle next year. This could make it the first automaker that uses a solid-state-battery-powered engine.

If everything goes as planned, Toyota solid-state batteries will be available for use in electric vehicles by mid-2024 or in 2025.

Does Toyota have solid-state batteries?

As of today October 2023, Toyota has yet to complete the production of their solid-state electric batteries, which have long been under research. Since the 1990s, Toyota has been researching solid-state batteries. Toyota holds patents covering a broad range of topics, including battery structure, manufacturing processes, and material Toyota was the first to develop a prototype vehicle that could be powered by a solid-state battery in 2020. Toyota and Panasonic formed an EV battery joint venture in the same year. Both companies collaborate to develop and research solid-state technology.

This shows their commitment to the development, and hopefully, in 2024 or 2025, they will have ready-to-use solid-state batteries for us.

At the moment, we, Toyota, are combining resources with Panasonic in researching and producing a solid-state battery after their established joint venture back in 2020. According to reports, the automaker increased its patent portfolio by 40% between 2016 and 2020.

Well, there is no argument that a solid-state battery outperforms it counterpart lithium battery, but the question of whether you Should wait for solid-state batteries or not will depend on you to decide. Though a solid-state battery provides more performance and safety than traditional lithium-ion batteries, I will still keep using the lithium battery while waiting for the solid-state batteries. 

How long until solid-state batteries are in cars?

To be on the safe side, I will say we should have 5 to 10 years of time which will allow for further research and mastering the production technology to aid in mass production of the batteries that will enable it available to all vehicles.
